The Changing Role of Women in Edwardian society

In Book 2 of the Ursula Marlow series, The Serpent and The Scorpion, Ursula is on a personal quest to assert her independence and succeed as a businesswoman. During the Edwardian era the notion that women could be intellectual equals of men was dismissed despite the notable achievements of many women. While in London conducting research I came across a quote in Pamela Horn's excellent book High Society- The English Social Elite, 1880-1914 that 'A woman cannot learn to early that her first social duty is never to be in the way'.
